Marvels & Mayhem
Blackpool Tower Circus.
Marvels & Mayhem is an exciting project funded by Esmée Fairbairn Collections Fund, delivered by the Museums Association which aims to enhance our understanding and knowledge of the Blackpool Tower Circus Collection.
Voices from the Circus
Norman Barrett, one of Britain’s best known circus personalities was the Ringmaster at Blackpool Tower Circus for 25 years.
Last year Norman held a talk at the Imperial Hotel about his fascinating and successful career and connection to Blackpool Tower Circus.
A talented roller skater who performed in the Tower Circus in 1959, Udo Schone has created this digital story using his own collections and with the support of Showtown Museum and Marvels and Mayhem to share a small snippet of experiences of working in the Circus.
The Amazing Gridneffs
Yuri Gridneff, of Blackpool Circus School, has created this digital story using his own collections and with the support of Showtown Museum and Marvels and Mayhem.
It is the story of The Gridneff family and their international story of touring with circus from Siberia to Blackpool throughout the twentieth century.
Resources for schools
A pack has been designed to support Key Stage 2 literacy work in the classroom, based upon the amazing Blackpool Tower Circus Collection of circus pictures, poster and programmes.
A special story has been commissioned by storyteller Emily Hennessey, inspired by the Circus Collection, to accompany this pack. Activities can be delivered as a cross-curricular unit taught over a few weeks or would also be suitable as stand-alone lessons. The activities emphasise paired or group work, but also include independent writing or comprehension.
